Skookum Asphalt Ltd. has been operating in the Yukon Territory since 1983 and is located in the City of Whitehorse, the Territorial capital. The City of Whitehorse is accessible by daily commercial airline flights and via the historic Alaska Highway which was built in 1942 to serve as a supply line between Dawson Creek, BC and Fairbanks, Alaska for the US Military during World War II. It now serves as the main route for receiving and transporting goods, as well as supplying our thriving summer tourism industry. It remains one of the most beautiful driving adventures with spectacular views of mountain ranges, flowing rivers, immense forests and incredible wildlife habitats. By air, we are a short two hour flight to/from Vancouver, Edmonton, or Calgary. Whitehorse is also a short distance to many popular Alaskan destinations. Skagway Alaska, a major cruise ship port is a short hour and a half long drive & Haines Alaska is four hours away along the Haines Highway which winds its way through the beautiful Kluane range and Anchorage, a major metropolitan destination, is a fourteen hour drive up the Alaska Highway.
The Yukon has a very rich history, sporting some of the most amazing tales of gold exploration and the old west. Very few dreams of striking it rich were realized in the Klondike gold rush of 1898, while most hopefuls found themselves broken and penniless after months and sometimes years of unimaginable hardships. The foundation of the Yukon was created by those who decided to stay and make the Yukon their new home once the Gold Rush had ended. Whitehorse and the Yukon have much to offer its residence and visitors alike. Whitehorse has become a major retail outlet with the influx of Major retail stores. Skookum Asphalt’s operation is located within the City of Whitehorse boundaries just a few short kilometres from the City centre. We are a widely diverse organization that provides a wide range of services to our customers including municipal, commercial and highway base & paving, excavation, gravelling, underground installations, chip sealing (bituminous surface treatment), cold mix and hot mix asphalt production, and a residential driveway segment. We offer a friendly team environment that believes in a “hands on” approach to learning and reinforcing acquired skills.
Our projects encompass vast regions of the North where we often complete in the Southeastern Alaska region, Inuvik NWT as well as our home base of Whitehorse and surrounding Yukon communities.
