As we believe in long term visions, our goal is to continue improving our performance but at the same time reducing our environmental impact. Our strategic stakes are as followed:
Energy for industries:
Manufacturing represents 60% of our energy consumption. Through tracking and monitoring that consumption, we can directly observe the effect of our energy reduction measures or react to any losses throughout our industrial activities.
Our actions are broad and vary from process improvements, production plants tune up, to management of our materials and stockpiles.
Energy for mobile and equipment fleet:
The second biggest consumption in our industry is fuel. With this in mind, we strive to find simple measures to reduce quantities of fuel used. Training of employees and idling restrictions are some examples that made us reduce our fuel consumption in the last couple of years.
Our long term goal is to reduce by 20% the fuel consumption below current levels.
Recycled Materials: We strive to promote the use of recycled materials. Their utilization helps saving natural resources such as virgin aggregates as well as liquid asphalt cement. In 2009, Terus saved the equivalent of one of our pits in terms of virgin aggregates and the annual consumption of 50 light vehicles in terms of energy.
The use of replacement cement in our ready mixed products is being increased and contributes to reducing land filling material as well as reducing the demand for cement. Since 2008 we reduced our consumption of virgin materials by 18%.
This quantity saved landfill space equivalent to 2.5 years of solid waste produced by an individual as well as enough energy to provide electricity for an average home for 6 weeks.
Environmental certification:
Terus is among the only companies in BC that has been accredited with the National Asphalt Pavement Association Diamond Award. This award acknowledges asphalt plants that show environmental stewardship as well as a good corporate citizenship.
Through this award, we show that our environmental practices are fulfilled, our environmental goals achieved and the dialogue with local communities emphasized.
